Although wood furniture looks like it can endure it all, if you want it to keep its polished look, you have to show it some TLC every now and then. For instance, if you live in a very humid or dry area, you have to factor that in and use some type of climate control in your home for indoor furniture. For outdoor wood patio furniture, you have no such luxury of climate control (unless you can control the weather). If you have polished wood furnishings, it’s very important that you keep them appropriately waxed otherwise your furniture will start to bubble on top, due to poor care in combination with weather changes. Polishing your vanished woods is essential so they can maintain their beauty. Scratches on wood surfaces are a part of life, luckily there are tons and tons of easy fixes for problems like this.
Moisture: Scratches and dings, are typically easy fixes, but any type of moisture imbalance in the air can warp and damage your furnishings for good. A good rule of thumb is, if you live in very humid climates, make sure to have a good air-conditioning system in your home to counterbalance all of the moisture in the air. The same goes for very dry weather, if you have a humidifier in your home, it can produce the adequate amount of moisture needed so that your wood furniture doesn’t dry out and become brittle as well as lose its luster. Make sure to avoid keeping your wood furniture in direct contact with sunlight in the day, and try to keep them away from a radiators or fireplaces. Remember that most woods already carry moisture and can dry out very easily, except for hard wood (hard wood by definition means that all of the moisture has been dried out it).
Wax: A great way to ensure that your carefully picked furniture maintains a polished look – is to polish it. A lot of people aren’t aware that furniture needs to be polished and maintained similar to car paint. If you don’t, over time, you’ll start to see hints of water damage which can be irrespirable. If your furniture is waxed, remember to remove the old wax prior to adding a new layer on it.
Scratches or Stains: Lastly, if your furniture has any unwanted scratches, you don’t have to resort to any drastic measures, such as sanding or painting them with color. Instead use any of the following home remedies. Start by looking at the color of your furniture, you can start by using shoe polish that matches it. Using a child’s crayon that matches the color of your wood grain actually works too (just be sure to test a spot before you do so). For cherry finishes, use shoe polish as well or even opt for iodine.
With these tid bits, you can DIY your furniture’s nicks and stains without having to spend an arm and a leg to call a professional to step in.
